In my cooking experience I find that it is good to do a grocery shop once a year to stock up on items that you use with certain styles of cooking. Lately I’ve been making a lot of asian dishes and have been finding that its really hard to buy the ingredients for just one dish and not spend a ton of money. The list below outlines the staples that I believe every chef (who prepares asian dishes on a regular basis) should have:

Oils & Vinegar:
Peanut Oil
Vegetable Oil
Sesame Oil
Rice Vinegar

Spices:
Ground ginger
Garlic
Curry (red and green)
Chili powder
Red pepper flakes

Natural Ingredients:
Lemon grass
Sesame Seeds
Bean paste
Scallions
Chives

Sauces:
Garlic Chili Paste
Soy Sauce
Oyster Sauce
Hoisin Sauce
Plum Sauce

Other:
Cornstarch
